The Situation
A leading Japanese diesel engine manufacturer needed to scale capacity against growing demand. Their existing China plant, run with a local partner, had quality issues. They already had an India trading presence but needed to understand the market, establish an International Procurement Office, and eventually build their own manufacturing plant.
The Innovalus Intervention
A market survey benchmarked 41 competitors with detailed lab analysis of the top 10 competing models. Of 35 components, the 10 driving 80% of cost were isolated, and 480 suppliers were evaluated across 25+ attributes to select the top 2 per component. This fed into standing up an International Procurement Office — sourcing suppliers, recruiting the team to run it — followed by manufacturing plant siting, land acquisition, securing 40+ regulatory approvals, and construction.
The Measurable Outcome
A differentiation plan against 41 competitors was delivered with volume and costing to breakeven. The International Procurement Office was stood up with 20 suppliers selected from a pool of 480, at a 10:1 recruitment conversion ratio for the team running it.
